Beam Features: Disconnecting when Undocked

This is the second in our series of posts on the unique and interesting features of Beam that make it a true remote presence device.

In our years of prototyping and field studies, we found that pilots would frequently disconnect without driving their device back to a nearby dock to charge its battery. This was almost always done inadvertently, but unfortunately left a lot of perfectly functional devices unusable with dead batteries. This simple issue is critically important for people and teams who depend on the technology as part of their everyday work life.

Therefore, we created a reminder that’s only shown if you attempt to disconnect while not on a dock:

If you really want to disconnect, you can. This small feature has cut down on dead batteries dramatically, and helps ensure you can find a Beam to use when you need one.
